Introduction to Sanskrit with Nityananda Chandra
Get to know the sounds, script and simple sentences behind yoga’s classical language in a practical online course for beginners.
Why it caught our eye
Connecting the written characters with sound and simple conversation offers several ways into a language you may have met only through a chant or a yoga term.
About this experience
If Sanskrit words appear in your yoga practice but still feel unfamiliar, this Bhakti Center course gives you a place to begin. With Nityananda Chandra, you explore the language used in texts such as the Bhagavad Gītā through pronunciation, reading and practical exercises. You do not need previous Sanskrit knowledge or a particular spiritual background.
What you can expect
The two meetings introduce Devanāgarī, the script used to write Sanskrit, alongside vocabulary, sentence structure and basic grammar. You also explore chandas, the rhythm and metre of verse, recite simple passages and try conversational Sanskrit. Questions are welcome, and the organiser recommends personal study and homework between meetings. One registration covers the course, rather than separate drop-in sessions.
Good to know before you go
The course is online and taught in English. The current Eventbrite price is USD117.09; the organiser’s information page separately describes a suggested contribution of USD108. Check the actual booking total before paying. The booking page offers refunds up to seven days before the event.
