Aerial Yoga Foundations
Aerial Yoga Foundations is a 1-hour Monday evening class at Yoga Nest Zentrum in Zürich, practised in a soft fabric hammock suspended from the ceiling. It is the introductory level, built around learning how the hammock holds you before doing anything demanding in it.
Why it caught our eye
What makes this class stand out is that the hammock changes what your body has to do. Postures that ask for strength on a mat are held for you here, so you can find the shape first and the effort later, and inversions become something you rest into rather than push into. It feels like a good choice for someone curious about aerial work who would rather begin with the foundations than drop into a mixed-level class already in motion.
What you can expect
You work with a hammock hung at roughly hip height, learning how to sit into it, wrap it and trust your weight to it. The class covers basic aerial postures, balance work and strengthening exercises, with gentle inversions where you hang supported. Each session opens with a warm-up and offers modifications, so people work at different depths in the same room. The hour closes with rest in the hammock.
Good to know before you go
The class runs on Mondays from 17:45 to 18:45 at Yoga Nest Zentrum, Münstergasse 20 in Zürich. Entry is CHF 35 per session, booked individually, and the class is taught in English. Wear a top that covers your armpits and reaches past your waist, since the fabric presses against bare skin, and avoid zips, buckles and jewellery that could catch. Bare feet. Being upside down is not right for everyone. The organisers ask you to check with a doctor first if you are pregnant, or if you have eye conditions such as glaucoma, cardiovascular conditions or high blood pressure. Inner-ear problems, recent surgery and vertigo are also worth raising before you book. The Münstergasse studio has step-free access, with showers and changing rooms on site.
